The brief

New Zealand, with its strong sporting culture and success in hosting several large sports events such as the 2002 America's Cup and the upcoming 2011 Rugby World Cup, wishes to strengthen its understanding of the benefits such events can bring to their country. With vast research on hard benefits such as tourism and infrastructure readily available, New Zealand Major Events, part of the ministry of tourism, is now focusing on delving into the social or 'soft' benefits that a sports events can bring. New Zealand Major Events has asked TSE Consulting to provide a detailed report on the subject.

Our response

The report written by TSE Consulting aims to outline the potential of generating social benefits from sports events, but delves even deeper by examining how these benefits can be measured and quantified in a cost-benefit analysis. The report was based on current systems of cost-benefit analysis with support from various case studies.

TSE Consulting has a wide-scale understanding of the need to quantify the benefits of bidding for and hosting sports events based on its years of experience working with various cities and ministries in countries placed around the world. TSE focused the report on the specificities of New Zealand and the social context of the country to provide concrete recommendations on the approach New Zealand can take on quantifying social benefits.

The report is a mixture of background research, methodological understanding of the processes used in a cost-benefit analysis of this sort and concrete recommendations to move New Zealand Major Events in the right direction for developing and benefiting from the social benefits that can be created from sports events.
