The brief

The government of Gauteng, the most populous province in the Republic of South Africa and the fourth largest economy within the African continent, has commissioned a major study to assist them with the development of a post 2010 event strategy for the region. This feasibility study was to assist the Provincial Government to develop a strategy and plan for bidding and hosting of major events beyond the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

Our response

The initial step was a government tender process that saw TSE going head to head with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Deloitte and KPMG. After a rigorous evaluation process, TSE was chosen to undertake this study on behalf of the Provincial Government.

The study primarily consisted of a sport events strategy development exercise to propose a long term strategy that will enable Gauteng to achieve its goal of becoming the 'Preferred Home for Competitive Sport', in the years beyond the football World Cup in 2010. The proposed strategy sought to support the province's Globally Competitive City Region and Growth and Development, and Competitive Sport Strategies.

Additionally, a condensed feasibility study was embedded within the study to assess the investment-versus-return for the bidding and staging of the Olympic Games (and other events along the major sport events spectrum) in Gauteng and how these events would impact Gauteng's status as a major sport events destination.
