In the past weeks many political figures, especially throughout Europe, have hinted that they are considering staying away from the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to mark their dissatisfaction towards Chinese policy in Tibet. Our reaction to this? One word: hypocritical. Because what is the logic behind using a non-commercial sports event as the arena for protest against a host country when the same political leaders eagerly fly into the same country with huge business delegations signing trade agreements for billions of dollars? China needs to improve its human rights record in order to deserve our respect as a great country. Equally, western politicians need to stop misusing the Olympic Games for domestic political purposes if they too want our respect.

The Opening Ceremony will be a political show in Beijing. It is a pity that the corruption and commercial business with China plays the most important role in the Games....

I have to say that I completely disagree with the editorial. The whole reason China are hosting is for international prestige that can not be bought through trade. Of course...

If they are appealing to boycott the Olympic Games, they have no face to attend these Games !!!...
