Would it be a bad idea if the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup were hosted in the same country only two years apart?

A year before the opening game, the FIFA World Cup in 2010 has captured the attention of not only the host nation but of the whole world. With such a long build up, the event itself is almost guaranteed to be a success - and the host nation has already managed to reap the benefits.

At the same time the momentum is growing for the London 2012 Olympic Games. With Beijing nothing but a distant memory, London has become the central focus for the Olympic movement and all of its followers.

Just imagine, however, that the 2010 FIFA World Cup, instead of being in South Africa was due to take place in England. Would anyone in the crazy football nation be aware, or more importantly even care, that London was also preparing for the Olympics? When the world's attention was on the 2010 FIFA World Cup would sponsors be investing in the 2012 Games? Would media be writing about Olympic preparations? Would Londoners themselves be thinking of anything beyond the upcoming football event?

We think the answer to all of these questions is no. Simply, it's not good planning to organise the two biggest international sports events in the same country just two years apart and this certainly has implications for the current bids for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

So, US, Japan and Spain - if your country will get the honour of hosting the 2016 Olympic Games (in Chicago, Tokyo or Madrid), you cannot expect FIFA to award you their 2018 World Cup. And Brazil - as host to the 2014 World Cup, it's hard to argue that the 2016 Olympic Games (in Rio) could be given the space and focus it deserves.

Though this may be of concern in a small half-island country like England, Brazil is large enough to accomodate both events easily. There is no lack of attention or space....
