The beauty of bidding

We believe that the IOC's decision to award Rio with the 2016 Olympic Games was a good one. With four great cities to choose from, however, it would have been difficult to make a bad choice. All four candidates were committed to and capable of hosting a great Olympic Games.

The 2016 race once again proved the power and positive effect that the bid process has on the Olympic Movement. The beauty of bidding is that having four of the world's biggest cities compete over the past two years through multi-million dollar campaigns has a much bigger worldwide impact on promoting the Olympic Movement than just one city could ever do with two weeks of sporting competition.

Unfortunately, however, as soon as the Olympic host is announced all of the positive promotion comes to a standstill. So, how can the promotion that started during the bid process be continued? We believe that the national Olympic committees may hold the answer. Aside from the social and branding benefits that each city has gained throughout the campaign process, such a race provides a perfect platform for each of the national Olympic committees to truly kick-start a meaningful sports development programme in their respective countries, thus providing huge benefits for the Olympic Movement as a whole.

Beyond the Bid

The IOC announced Rio as the host for the 2016 Games, but should each one of the great candidate cities, and the Olympic Movement as a whole, not be able to realise the benefits of this race for years to come?
