Widespread discussion has recently sprung about good governance principles within sports organisations and whether a term limitation should be imposed upon their leaders. The arguments for and against term limitation are both strong - so what is better for the long term success of an organisation?

Imposing term limitation could force knowledgeable professionals out of the organisation even if they have contributed positively to the institution. Additionally, elections already represent an opportunity for voters to give their verdict regarding the office holder's re-election ambitions. In a democracy, the eventual ballot's outcome determine how limited the term shall be.

Alternatively, term limitation leads the organisation to become more independent from personalities and as a result empowers the institution - i.e. internal processes, mechanisms of control, etc. - rather than empowering its incumbent leader. The organisation opens itself to fresh ideas and gains in dynamicity as things need to get done in a planned fashion so that it may be sustained by newly-elected leaders in subsequent years.

In the long-term should the institution and overall development of an organisation not be a priority? In order to secure the long-term success of the institution having some kind of limitation may be constructive to the sports organisation's self-empowerment.
