Discussions regarding a reform of FIFA's governance structure have recently occupied the international sports media. FIFA has been repeatedly challenged on who would eventually lead this process: the governing body itself or an external group appointed by them?

Based on the quite serious situation in and around FIFA, an external 'eye' - often more critical towards what it sees - would certainly increase the organisation's credibility with the international public opinion. The guarantee of independence, which an external group could provide, would equally be an evident display of the organisation's commitment towards confronting its issues and effectively repairing its image with the global community.

Real change, however, should come from within. If FIFA uses its internal resources rather than an external group to face current challenges, the organisation will avoid the risk of reaching solutions which are out of tune with the organisation's strategic views and operations. Moreover, involving its own leadership, members and staff in such endeavour is more likely to lead to a higher internal buy-in regarding the outcomes achieved.

Effective changes are not externally imposed; they are a result of collective efforts from those composing the organisation and its leadership. If leaders cannot lead and revitalize their own organisations even in tough times - who can?
